Can I Go Now?
So, as you may have heard, the city that I live in is not exactly pedestrian friendly. The city is working on ways to make it better though. They have a new bus route and they’ve recently approved a new bicycling and pedestrian plan. And none of it’s too soon either.
As I was driving to work this morning (yes, driving. I was lazy), I passed two crosswalk signals. One at the intersection of Onslow Drive and Highway 17 and one at the intersection of Henderson Drive and Doris Ave. At both of these intersections all the signals were showing the STOP hand. All of them…in every direction. And this wasn’t just a one time thing. We were riding the bus recently and were at the Henderson/Doris intersection and they were all showing the hand. When I drove home today, the hand.
That’s not the worst of it. There’s a signal down the street from us, it doesn’t even work. As in, the buttons for the signal, yeah…they aren’t there. Oh, the boxes for the buttons are there, they just don’t have buttons in them. Nice, huh?
My question is, why have the signals, if they aren’t going to work or aren’t on the correct schedule?

Here’s a question or 2 or… Does the little button really do anything? Or is it (supposed to be) there to make you feel like it does something? Have you ever really noticed a change in the pattern of the lights to accommodate the pedestrian? I know I have pulled up to a light (already red or changing) and watched someone push “the button.” The traffic light still changed green before the pedestian could go. WTF?
And no, it is not a bad blog… it really is an issue.
