A Spot of Tea

I made the most awesome pitcher of iced green tea today.  Mmmmmm.  I need to get some decaf green tea so I can make myself an evening pitcher, too.

Since summer came, I found myself drinking more pop and, since we don’t drink diet pop around here, I was worried about my sugar intake, even though my glass of pop is much less than a normal person because I fill it up as much as I can with ice.  Because I’m an ice chewer. (Yes, I know what it supposedly means.  Shut up.)  But still.  I was drinking more pop than normal.

We decided to go out to eat last night and almost went to Molly Branigan’s, but then remember that it was Roar on the Shore weekend.  And we both detest the sound of motorcycles, so we opted to go west to Oscar’s (why does Oscar’s not have a website?).  And I ordered iced tea.  It seems I’d forgotten how much I like iced tea.  Duh.  So when we got home, I made a nice big pitcher of it.  Unfortunately, all I had in the house was green tea with caffeine, so I’ve added decaf green tea to the grocery list.

Al, in an effort to assist me in my search for a flavorful decaf beverage for evenings, was kind enough to point out that most beer is caffeine free, although it seems there’s a new trend afoot.

As a relocated Pennsylvanian, I must ask…was the tea sweetened or did you have to sweeten it yourself? Anywho…most of the Celestial Seasonings brand are decaffeinated and have some flavor to them…if you like herbal tea. We like the Wild Cherry Flavor but I would definitely recommend that when you make it, you split the amount of tea bags between regular and flavored or use less of the flavored kind. That way the herbal taste isn’t so over-powering. Also, if you can find it…Republic of Teas’ Jerry Cherry Tea is excellent. I don’t know if it’s decaf or not though.

Absolutely UNSWEETENED. And I don’t add any sugar/sweetener to it either. Lemon is okay. But that “sweet tea” crap they serve down in your part of the country? Oh. My. Gawd. It’s like drinking pure sugar water. There’s no “tea” flavor to it.

The green tea I have is Celestial Seasonings. I think green tea is the only one they have that comes in both caffeine and decaf varieties, so you have to pay attention. I have some other Celestial Seasonings decaf varieties in the cupboard, but I’m on a green tea kick these days. ;)

Uggh…no…It’s go to have at least a little sugar in it for me. I can’t tell you how many times I was on a trip to visit family/friends and I’d hit Virginia and order a tea forgetting that it’s not automatically sweetened. I’d take a big ol’ gulp and get a surprise. Not fun. Not fun at all.

I know I’m a bit of an anomaly what with not putting any sugar in my tea (I don’t put sugar in hot tea either, nor do I put sugar in coffee or espresso), but that sweet tea stuff might as well just be hummingbird food. I saw a billboard here in Erie not long ago advertising that McDonald’s now has “sweet tea,” and I wondered when the hell Erie moved south of the Mason Dixon line. Blech.

I was caffeine-free for many many years but now I have some once in a while. I can’t remember the name but there’s a line of teas that’s excellent & they have caffeine-free varieties. The cans have a Mucha-like art design; Wegmans sells it.

Warm apple cider & caffeine-free hot cocoa are a must for autumn ;)

I’ll have to look for that tea on my next Wegman’s run. Thanks.
