Sunspot
Al and I rearranged the living room a while ago and, as it happened, only the top of the back cushion of the couch gets hit by the sun in the morning. This means that the dog was attracted to that particular spot… like iron shavings to a magnet.
Remember those pictures of the guy that had iron shavings in it and you would make a beard and mustache by dragging the shavings around with a magnet?
As a result of this, we found that in the mornings, the dog was parking her nearly-30-pound furry self on the top of the back cushion of the couch. And this, in turn, was causing the back cushion of the couch to develop what we hope is not a permanent swayback horse look. As the couch and loveseat are relatively new, we were rather displeased with this turn of events. But how to keep the pooch off the couch when no one is around and, frankly, even when we are around, she’s just so damned cute all curled up and precariously perched that we were feeling like ogres for chasing her off. Well, at least I was.
The solution? The puppydog’s ottoman.
Yes, she has her own footstool. Sort of. It’s an old ottoman that matched my old living room furniture. And that old living room furniture was handed down to me by my parents. That’s how old this footstool is. It’s normally covered in fleece blankets because the pooch loves her some fleeceyness (and, to a lesser extent, because it doesn’t match the new furniture), and parked in front of the loveseat, where Al and I usually sit when in the living room. The pooch would curl up on it between our legs/feet and all was right with the world.
Over the weekend, I decided to try an experiment. I moved the footstool over in front of the living room window that gets the most sun, especially in the morning, and… voila… just as I had hoped, the pooch jumped up on it, adjusted herself into a very comfortable position, and commenced snoring. Success!
Of course, now Al and I need to find a new ottoman to use over by the loveseat.
And, as I just noticed with the mailman’s arrival today, this placement of this ottoman in front of the window allows the pooch a bird’s eye view out the window. Do you know what that means?
There’s puppydog snot all over the window. You know, it’s always something, isn’t it?

Ah, the things we do for our pets. There is a table in my house whose sole purpose is to provide the cats with a place to sit in the sun and look out the window. To wit: http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=photoxrq.jpg&via=tfrog
That’s Darwin, and that’s the kitty table, and yes, the window is absolutely covered with kitty nose and paw prints.

It’s a small world — I spent a little bit of my Sunday wiping puppy dog snot off a window.

Great picture, Snerdie. But Darwin looks like he might appreciate a little blanket or something on that hard table.
I think I’m just going to start storing the paper towels and Windex next to the dog’s ottoman. Sheesh.
