The Big Story
I watch MSNBC on occasion. Okay, maybe more frequently than “on occasion.” But, in my defense, I think there are probably worse things than being a news junkie. Like the day I spent almost the entire day watching a Law & Order: SVU marathon. Entertaining? Yes. Productive? Not so much. I think that was probably a worse waste of my time than watching MSNBC. At least under normal circumstances.
Today is not a normal circumstances.
MSNBC has been more … um … sensational than usual. Oh, they had a little bit about the stock market, the California Supreme Court hearing arguments on Prop 8, the President’s upcoming news conference regarding health care/insurance, and, of course, the requisite story du jour about the Republican party and it’s Head Gasbag, it quickly devolved into a discussion about the President’s hair cut and color (he’s apparently going grey…I know, shocking… sigh), but what was the big story late this morning early this afternoon? MSNBC keeps cutting to live shots of Michael Jackson heading to a press conference in London, England, supposedly about a new concert tour.
I understand that there are different categories of news and that not all news has to be political in nature… that entertainment news is actually news. My gripe here is that the anchors are treating it like it’s the biggest story since the election. They keep returning to their “live shots” of Michael Jackson boarding his silver bus, the bus in route to wherever this press conference is going to be, and interviews with the people gathered at location of the eventual press conference. The anchors are talking about Michael Jackson’s health, Michael Jackson’s past brushes with the law, Michael Jackson spending much of his time in Europe as opposed to the U.S., blah, blah, blah, blah.
So, I’m switching over to CNN now. And if I see any “live coverage” of Michael Jackson, I’m going to start looking for Law & Order or House reruns.

(I’m totally, TOTALLY kidding, in case you couldn’t tell. I’m as disgusted as you that anyone would even waste five seconds of air time on that freakazoid has-been.)
