Full Circle
Al and I popped in at Kathy Dahlkemper’s victory party late this evening, just long enough to congratulate her and a few people we know who worked tirelessly on her campaign.
While talking to some of those who worked on the campaign, we learned that Phil English never even called Dahlkemper to concede and congratulate her. Isn’t that standard operating procedure in elections?
His concession speech, which Al and I saw part of on the news, blamed being “outspent” for his failure to be re-elected and claimed that he ran an “issues oriented” campaign. The plethora of ads I got from English and the NRCC prove otherwise, however. Those ads were not “issue oriented.” They were attack ads, plain and simple.
English came full circle. He ran a classless campaign. And he remained classless to the end.
UPDATE:
I just received word early this morning that apparently Phil English finally called Kathy Dahlkemper to congratulate her on her win… sometime after 1:00 a.m. on November 5, 2008, which was after Al and I left Dahlkemper’s party and after I originally posted this blog entry. That phone call was also well after the race had been called, well after English’s public concession speech, well after Dahlkemper’s public victory speech, well after McCain’s concession speech, and even after President-elect Obama delivered his victory speech. It seems class and decorum were not lessons he learned at that prestigious boarding school he attended. Or at least not ones he practices.
