Ms. Steinfeld recently did a review of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, so I thought I would write about Love Liza.
Be warned, for a full review, there must be spoilers. Meet you after the jump!
I confess to only watching the movie because Dan Klass (Yes, that Dan Klass) talked about his part in the movie a few months ago.
The movie was very hard to get into…It’s not full of action, At first, I was sympathetic with Wilson (Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose wife recently committed suicide. But, as Wilson gets into gasoline huffing to deaden his pain, I lost that sympathy. Wilson walks away from his job, his family (in the form of Kathy Bates), his life. He walks away from his commitments and gets wrapped up in a fume-induced high. It’s not an act, regardless of the cause, that I can sympathize. And, I think, we’re not supposed to sympathize with Wilson. I think we’re supposed to think that he’s weak and pathetic.
Wilson goes through several adventures while searching for his fume: He purchases two remote controlled airplanes (excuses for purchasing the fuel), disrupts a remote-controlled boat race (by swimming in the race-course), and gets (then loses) a job. He also enables several teenagers in huffing.
All the while, Wilson has the suicide letter left by his wife, but refuses to read it.
In the end, Wilson reads the letter, and, while trying to burn it, also starts a fire in his home. A fire from which he walks away. The movie ends with Wilson walking down the highway in his underwear.
All in all, it was an unsatisfying movie, but I suppose, that’s what happens when you choose a movie because Dan Klass has a bit part.
Don’t worry, though, I’m still a big Dan Klass fan.
