Thanks to Marion Blackburn’s writing on Jack Kerouac, I’ve been interested in reading his works. I mentioned before that my local library system didn’t have Big Sur, which was the book Marion was reading. In their inability to have the works of a notable and often-lauded American novelist and poet, I traipsed to the local Barnes and Noble and got a copy of The Town and The City.

I figured that I should start at the beginning of Kerouac’s writing to enjoy the full experience. My plan is to work my way through all his works in order. I haven’t decided how I’m going to blog the reading. I may blog the reading by chapter or by book. But, somehow or other, I’ll pass on the experience.

Unfortunately, as evidenced by the image at left, the Onslow County Public Library System has no copies.

It’s certainly disappointing even if not surprising.

Jacksonville, NC is getting a Barnes and Noble Booksellers (not a bookstore!) and the grand opening is tomorrow.
Tonight, however, the store is hosting a pre-opening sale (with some of the proceeds to benefit the Onslow County Library System) from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. It’s free and open to the public.
Come out and support the Libaries.

It was 2001: A Space Odyssey that really turned me on to science fiction. A man in space…A psychotic robot…An alien monolith…The search for the human origin, even though those on the search didn’t realize it.

I’ve enjoyed sci-fi since. Whether it’s Star Wars, Star Trek, books, teevee, or film, I can watch or read science fiction for hours. And it’s all because of Arthur C. Clarke.

Thank you, Mr. Clarke, for your gift to the world, and your gift to me.
