Car-Free: Work Week 8 in Review

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Another week goes by.
A few things to note:
I surpassed 500 commuted miles.
I didn’t bicycle to work (or, even go) on Wednesday. I was home with a migraine.
I was nearly clipped by a green Landrover driven by a young Marine yesterday evening. I was on Bayshore waiting on the traffic light so I could [...]

Jacksonville Daily News: Lindell Kay is Getting Some Undeserved Flack

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Lindell Kay isn’t my biggest fan and, frankly, I’m not a big fan of his writing or public speaking abilities. But he’s getting some flack on his blog that he really doesn’t deserve.
It started when Kay blogged about the autopsy for a home-free fellow that was murdered along some railroad tracks in Jacksonville in June. [...]

The Jacksonville Daily News: Wherein the City of Jacksonville Throws a Tantrum

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The Jacksonville Daily News reports:
City officials say the base is luring away its best and brightest officers with salaries the city can’t compete with, but base officials said they cannot deny local law enforcement the right to apply for the jobs.

It seems to me that the City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Police Department are upset [...]

The Jacksonville Daily News: Readers Pass Judgment on Killed Cyclist

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

It’s been less than 24 hours since a cyclist was killed last night on the Northeast Creek Bridge and readers of the Jacksonville Daily News have already passed judgment.
At the Jacksonville Daily News‘ article, readers “animal” and “jyoho12″ figure that the cyclists shouldn’t have been on the road when there’s a bicycle path available.
Says [...]

Here’s a Reason for the Jacksonville Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

The Jacksonville Daily News reports.
Around 11:30 p.m., a vehicle traveling west on Lejeune Boulevard hit two bicyclists heading in the same direction — sending one into the water under the bridge, Teeter said.

Emergency Rescue crews found the body this morning.
The driver left the scene (or, rather, didn’t bother stopping) and hasn’t been found.
This [...]

Do Cyclists Subsidize Roads More Than Car-Drivers?

Monday, March 10th, 2008

A paper (PDF) linked by Commute by Bike suggests that they do. The paper, “Whose Roads?: Defining Bicyclists’ and Pedestrians’ Right to Use Public Roadways,” was commissioned by the Victoria Transport Policy Institute suggests that cyclists pay more for less usage than their car-driving counterparts.
Give the paper a read. It’s what I’ll be reading during [...]

Dear Jacksonville Police Department: Tell Your Officers to Obey the Traffic Laws they Enforce

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I was looking out the window today and noticed a uniformed Jacksonville Police Officer on an official Jacksonville Police Department bicycle. This, in and of itself, is unremarkable. What was remarkable though, was that I watched this bicycling officer breeze right through the exact intersection as Jacksonville City Police Cruiser # 355.
The NC Department [...]

Weekend Wackiness: Jacksonville gives Westboro what they want

Monday, January 28th, 2008

So, wasn’t it ever-so predictable that the City of Jacksonville gave the Westboro Baptist Church fruitcakes exactly what they wanted?
Not only did the means-well-but-isn’t-that-smart crowd show up to protest the protest, but the City of Jacksonville Police re-routed traffic in order to keep people away from the protesting Protestants (which, of course, just made people [...]
