Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Perhaps I’ll watch Cool Hand Luke (my favorite Newman film) in his honor. It is conveniently available on NetFlix’s On-Demand service.

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones’ family and officials at Huron Hospital have announced that the five-term congresswoman has died.

It was an aneurysm and it was sudden, as aneurysms are prone to be.

Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film “Shaft,” has died, sheriff’s officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.

Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper “Ocean’s Eleven” and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom “The Bernie Mac Show,” died Saturday at age 50.

I was, at first, leery of Bernie’s comedy. But after watching his shows and seeing his stand-up routines on Comedy Central I was converted. Mac knew funny.

And there’s less funny in the world today.

Skip Caray, a voice of the Atlanta Braves for 33 years and part of a family line of baseball broadcasters that included Hall of Famer Harry Caray, died in his sleep at home on Sunday, the team said. He was 68.

Unfortunately since the Braves are no longer nationally broadcast on TBS, I haven’t seen a home game since last year. I always enjoyed hearing Caray call the games.

He’ll be missed.

Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV’s “The Golden Girls,” has died. She was 84.

Former White House press secretary Tony Snow — who once told reporters “I’m a very lucky guy” — has died at the age of 53 after a second battle with cancer.

I’ve disagreed with almost anything that ever came out of Tony Snow’s mouth, but it’s still sad to hear of someone dying after battling cancer.

Comedian-actor George Carlin, known for his raunchy but insightful humor, died of heart failure Sunday in Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 71.

Carlin was definitely insightful. People may have disliked the way he presented information but no one can deny that most of his observations on human behavior were spot on.

Bo Diddley, the musical pioneer whose songs, such as “Who Do You Love?” and “Bo Diddley,” melded rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll through a distinctive thumping beat, has died. He was 79.

Thank you, Bo, for the way you revolutionized music.
