It’s a Whole New Bike

Saturday I picked up the Day-Tripper from The Bicycle Shop with a new set of handlebars, brake levers and bar-con gear shifters…And man, let me tell you, she’s a beautiful creature!
The goal here isn’t to mimic a road bike or gain speed or anything like that. The goal is to provide more hand positions for [...]

2010: The Obligatory Goals Post

It’s a new year. And that means new goals. Many of my goals are the same as last year…Goals that I’ve failed at achieving. But, we never let failure stop us from trying to succeed. We’d really never get anything done if we did!
There’s a number of things I want to do this year.
Writing: [...]

Bicyclist’s Behavior from the Driver’s Seat

It’s been no secret that I haven’t been bicycle commuting the last few months (since September). It started with an illness and has just been snowballing after that.
So, as I’ve been driving to my office aboard Camp Lejeune, I’ve spent plenty of time in stop-and-go traffic. This has afforded me to observe bicyclists’ behavior from [...]

Down East Cyclists: Invitation to Down East Cyclists’ and City of Jacksonville Family Fun Ride on October 10th, 2009

On behalf of the Down East Cyclists’ bicycling club, I’d like to invite you to participate in the Down East Cyclists Family Fun Ride on October 10th, 2009 at 9 o’clock in the morning.
The Family Fun Ride will begin at the Onslow County Tax Office on Court Street and will follow the Rails-to-Trails Greenway to [...]

An Assortment of Dissociated and Disjointed Thoughts

I provide my usual and all-too-often needed apologies for being a less-than-stellar blogger.
This post is a mixed-bag of stuff that’s been floating around my head these few weeks.
The race for Jacksonville’s City Council
There hasn’t been much public campaigning. Mr. Hunter Hadley, Jr (At-Large) has yard signs posted. Councilwoman Reva Sullivan (Ward 2) is hosting [...]

The Wheel is Only as Strong as It’s Weakest Spoke

…And that the rate I’m breaking spokes (4th in as many weeks was today), I’m beginning to fear for my rear wheel. I was really hoping to not leave the apartment all weekend. Drat!
Other than that, this was a pretty uneventful week as far as adventures in bicycling.

The Rumors of My Demise are Greatly Exaggerated

…But not by much.
I could regale you with excuses of why I haven’t blogged in a few weeks, but I’ll save all that. Instead, I’ll just tell you what’s been going on…
Firstly, AM and I tried out hands at kayaking at one of the MCCS-sponsored tours of the New River. This was not the wisest [...]

Activism: An Opportunity for a Better Bicyclist Protection Act

Earlier this evening, HB 1451 – Bicycle Protection Act was removed from the NC House Transportation Committee agenda for tomorrow. This week is the legislative deadline for passing measures which do not involve money. There were no appropriations in the Bicycle Protection Act, so it is effectively dead.
It’s at once irritating (the committee doesn’t feel [...]

Activism: Email to NC House Rep George Cleveland (NC-House 14) RE: Bicycle Protection Act

As I mentioned yesterday, the NC House Transportation Committee is meeting Tuesday and will consider House Bill 1451 – Bicycle Protection Act. If you live in North Carolina, I hope you’ll write your representatives, especially if they’re members of the House Transportation Committee, as is Mr. Cleveland.
The following is the text of the email I [...]

Car-Free: The Wheels on the Bike Go ‘Round and ‘Round…

May is National Bicycle Month. May 11th to 15th is Bicycle to Work Week and May 15th is Bicycle to Work Day. If you can’t ride all month or all week, shoot for Friday. Think you can’t commute by bicycle? Guess again, my friends. Unfortunately, there are no events sponsored by the City of Jacksonville [...]
