Jacksonville NC: A Green Commuter Community?

Monday, September 15th, 2008

The previously mentioned Jacksonville Daily News article has been published.
My above linked previous post sets the premise of the article, so I won’t repeat it here. I will point out new information, though.
Like Jacksonville Mayor Sammy Phillips’ bogus claim that the City has “done a lot” to promote alternative transportation:
“We’re certainly proud of that designation,” [...]

2008 Elections: Call for Questions for Candidates Running for Onslow County Board of Commissioners

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

I’d like to send the candidates running for the Onslow County Board of Commissioners a questionnaire (hopefully to be answered by election day).
Here are some of the questions I have:

The Onslow County Board of Commissioners and the City Council of Jacksonville have not been able to work well together in recent years. Would you [...]

Community Organizers

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I haven’t covered the 2008 elections enough since the North Carolina Primaries in May and for that I apologize.
Some of the comments made on Wednesday evening have given me cause to join the conversation…Former New York City Mayor and also-ran for the Republican nomination Rudy Giuliani and Alaska’s Governor and Republican candidate for Vice President [...]

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give to you Maverick McCain!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

FactCheck.org asks:
Is it true John McCain voted with George Bush 95 percent of the time?

And answers.
The claim is true. According to Congressional Quarterly’s Voting Studies, in 2007 McCain voted in line with the president’s position 95 percent of the time – the highest percentage rate for McCain since Bush took office – and voted in [...]

Letter to the Editor: My Letter RE Jacksonville City Council’s Approval of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was Printed

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

The Jacksonville Daily News printed a slightly revised version of this post as a letter to the editor in today’s paper.
To save some frustration for my more reasonable readers, please by-pass the first letter on the page.
Just thought I’d share.

City of Jacksonville: City Council Approves Bicycling and Pedestrian Plan

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

In case you missed last night’s Twitter flurry (view my profile history), the Jacksonville City Council considered and approved the Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan.
Councilman Randy Thomas who cast the lone dissenting vote, was confused about the purpose of this plan. Other City residents, such as Mr. Robert Hitch, are also confused.
The [...]

City of Jacksonville: My Email to the Mayor and City Council Regarding The Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The below text is from an email I sent to the Mayor of Jacksonville and the members of the City Council.
Please feel free to use the text to send your own email of support for The Comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan.
Also be aware that the Mayor and Council will be voting on the Plan [...]

Tradin’ in the Toyota for a Trek…or…Bicycling into the 21st Century

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

In most parts of the world (Europe, Asia, Africa and South America), the bicycle is one of the most-used forms of transportation (seconded only by feet, I’d bet). According to Ibike.org’s statistical data library, 30% of trips in the Netherlands in 1998 were by bicycle. Indeed, even in modern France, the bicycle is such [...]

Open Letter: Senator McCaskill, I want to email you, but you think I’m spam…

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Dear Senator McCaskill,
Twice I’ve attempted to email you regarding House Concurrent Resolution 305 and twice you’ve told me that, while you “appreciate hearing” from me, “Unfortunately, your message was caught in Senate spam filters.” Your email recommends that I “…please submit your comments through the webform on my Senate website – http://mccaskill.senate.gov.” I did, Senator [...]

Jesse Helms’ Legacy

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

I know I previously posted the last word on Helms…But I think that given the recent news about the AIDS/HIV epidemic in the U.S, it’s important to place it in the correct context.
From the Chicago Tribune:
The AIDS epidemic in the U.S. is far worse than previously reported, the government said Saturday in releasing new findings.About [...]
