Camp Lejeune: A Response to My ICE Comment RE: Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Aboard Camp Lejeune

I received a response to the ICE comment I submitted last week.

Mr. Brock,
Thanks for your comments.  Our Traffic Safety personnel will be investigating
your comments and recommending corrective actions.

In addition to the comments directed to me, there were instructions and questions directed to appropriate staff-members.

Staff were directed to: “investigate whether or not JAX PD offers those services” (I’m guessing that’s in regards to the safety and self-defense classes I recommended) and asked are “the signs that we have there now adequate?” (in regards to recommended signs near crosswalks) and questioning under whose purview the “Welcome Home” signs fall (adding that “It’s not the MP’s responsibility”.)

Though I did not respond to the email, below are the answers to those questions.

  • I do not believe the Jacksonville Police Department offers any sort of self-defense or safety training. If they do, it’s woefully under-marketed and no one knows about it.
  • Clearly the signs currently near the crosswalks aren’t adequate or I wouldn’t have suggested new ones that specifically tell drivers not to block them.
  • In general, the units are required to remove their “welcome home” signs after returning. There’s no way to know which unit is responsible for which signs, though. That whole deal is pretty jacked up. Perhaps Marine Corps Base can “lease” fence-space to units after having  a request submitted. At least then there’d be a way to hold them responsible. It’d also be a way to take care of the low-class sign problem we frequently have…

But, hey, it was a polite response and I was copied on the guidance provided to staff.

Blue line
