Apologies for the Slow Blogging

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

My brain, it hurts.
Until I return (it’ll be soon, I promise), enjoy William Shatner explain the impetus behind his interpretation of Rocket Man from the 1978 SciFi Saturn Awards.
If you’re a Shatner fan (and I am unapologetic about my fanboyishness for Shatner), check out The Shatner Project.

Here’s the full performance, too.

In Memoriam: Paul Newman

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

CNN reports.
Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Perhaps I’ll watch Cool Hand Luke (my favorite Newman film) in his honor. It is conveniently [...]

Car-Free: Work Week 6 in Review

Friday, September 26th, 2008

You know, I may have to “suspend” the week in review posts if nothing exciting happens…
It’s been another week of pedaling to and from work without real incident.
It’s been a bit chilly (upper 60s/lower 70s) in the mornings. It’s also been damp and windy, what with a tropical storm having developed off the coast [...]

New Bern Sun Journal: End of Man on a Bike

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

I’ve gotten word from Justin Schoenberger that the New Bern Sun Journal’s “Man on a Bike” online column has come to an end. Unfortunately with his workload at the Kinston Free Press, he’s not able to spend a lot of time on the bicycle.
Schoenberger has a great writing style and has had quite a few [...]

A Reader Writes: My Boycott of NBC in support of McCain/Palin 08

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

An email just hit my inbox.
Fellow Republicans,
"I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore!"  I am boycotting NBC over their biased reporting of the campaign and the SNL skit on Saturday night.  I am also boycotting their sponsors…
It might not seem like much, but I am also giving up [...]

Action Alert: Contact Your Elected Representatives About the Bush Administration’s $700,000,000,000 Wall Street Bail-Out Plan

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Contact your elected representatives and urge them not to support the Bush Administration’s $700,000,000,000 bail-out of Wall Street on our tax-dime. The Bush Plan has no support for Main Street Americans or home-owners that face foreclosure. The Administration’s plan also specifically denies Americans any course of action for oversight or recourse against the government’s actions [...]

Car-Free: Work Week 5 In Review

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Other than the weather turning a bit chilly in the mornings and a few run-ins with bike-ninjas, there’s really nothing exciting to report about the commute. I know it’s boring for you guys to read, but I’d much rather bore you than have to deal with something like this every day. I’m just kind of [...]

Jacksonville Daily News: Former Councilman Bittner Feels “Affronted” by Green City Comments

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Today’s Jacksonville Daily News has a Letter to the Editor from former Jacksonville City Councilman Jerry Bittner. Mr. Bittner feels that the impact of previous City Councils was minimized by comments made by City Manager Kristoff Bauer (and myself, though Bittner didn’t call me out on it).
Bittner points to the Rails-to-Trails project (which Bittner didn’t [...]

Action Alert: Contact your Senators to Ask Their Support for the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Thanks to bikelovejones for this hat-tip.
Beth, the writer at bikelovejones says we should contact our Senators and ask them to support the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008.
This legislation will do all kinds of good stuff to improve America’s energy situation, but specifically, it provides tax benefits for bicycle commuters.
Check out the [...]

Jacksonville Daily News: More to the New River Foundation Story

Monday, September 15th, 2008

The little voices in my head tell me that there’s more to this story.
I wonder if the Jacksonville Daily News is going to bother looking for the real reasons the New River Foundation has abandoned the Waterkeeper Alliance?
When Joe Houle said:
“We will be free to go ahead and do our river cleanups and do [...]
