Jesse Helms’ Legacy

I know I previously posted the last word on Helms…But I think that given the recent news about the AIDS/HIV epidemic in the U.S, it’s important to place it in the correct context.

From the Chicago Tribune:

The AIDS epidemic in the U.S. is far worse than previously reported, the government said Saturday in releasing new findings.
About 56,300 people are now thought to be infected with HIV annually—a startling 40 percent jump from the government’s previous estimate of 40,000.

This is Jesse Helms’ legacy: An AIDS/HIV epidemic worse than we knew, by nearly half. Each of his vile diatribes against “homosexuals” and each of his votes against AIDS/HIV funding have caused this epidemic to be far worse than we ever suspected.

This is Jesse Helms’ legacy: The suffering, the sickness and the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans.

So, maybe we should think twice about those that supported Helms and those that speak well of him.
