Car-Free: Saturday Edition

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

After AM and I ran some Saturday morning errands, we decided to have lunch at Elsa’s Place (a locally owned and operated Island cuisine restaurant). Unfortunately, they were closed for the Labor Day weekend.
We decided to hoof it to Jeff’s Burgers, Dogs and Milkshakes (another locally owned and operated restaurant). We stayed on the [...]

Car-Free: Work Week 2 in Review

Friday, August 29th, 2008

It’s the end of the second full week of car-free fun.
This week had my first over-20 mile day, first commute in the rain, first bus-ride to work, and my first over-50 mile week (over 70 miles, actually). I also got in a nearly-7 mile recreational ride around Camp Lejeune.
The lessons learned are thus:

I need [...]

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give to you Maverick McCain!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

FactCheck.org asks:
Is it true John McCain voted with George Bush 95 percent of the time?

And answers.
The claim is true. According to Congressional Quarterly’s Voting Studies, in 2007 McCain voted in line with the president’s position 95 percent of the time – the highest percentage rate for McCain since Bush took office – and voted in [...]

Car-Free: Walking, It’s Much Slower than Pedaling

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I rode the Jacksonville Transit bus to work today.
Unfortunately for me, the current route is begins in Downtown Jacksonville (at 6am) and ends in Camp Lejeune’s Midway Park housing area (at 7:30am). Also unfortunately for me, the bus doesn’t go to Camp Lejeune’s main entrance. I have to walk from Midway Park to the gate [...]

Letter to the Editor: My Letter RE Jacksonville City Council’s Approval of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was Printed

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

The Jacksonville Daily News printed a slightly revised version of this post as a letter to the editor in today’s paper.
To save some frustration for my more reasonable readers, please by-pass the first letter on the page.
Just thought I’d share.

Car-Free: One Pedal in Front of the Other

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Today was a hard day to ride.
My legs were dead after yesterday’s near marathon of riding. I was hungry all day and ate too much last night, which caused me to wake up at 3am and not be able to go back to sleep until about 5 (which makes a 5:25am wake-up much more painful). [...]

Car-Free: 23-mile Day

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Today was the most riding I’ve done in one day ever.
I bicycled to MCAS New River this morning to coordinate a training and back to the apartment (5 miles each way) and then to work and home (6.4ish miles each way).
I actually don’t feel sore or anything. But I’m tired and I’ve been [...]

Cracking open Kerouac

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Thanks to Marion Blackburn’s writing on Jack Kerouac, I’ve been interested in reading his works. I mentioned before that my local library system didn’t have Big Sur, which was the book Marion was reading. In their inability to have the works of a notable and often-lauded American novelist and poet, I traipsed to the local [...]

Car-Free: Work-Week 1 in Review

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

It’s the end of the first work-week without the Silver Rhino. And, really, it hasn’t been too bad.
I needed to borrow AM’s car twice. Monday and Wednesday I watched Mini and used her car to get there and back. And, you know, I felt kind of cheap. Like I’m cheating on the first week of [...]

In Memoriam: Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Cleveland’s Plain Dealer.
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones’ family and officials at Huron Hospital have announced that the five-term congresswoman has died.

It was an aneurysm and it was sudden, as aneurysms are prone to be.
