The Jacksonville Daily News: The Little Things That Make Me Happy

Today’s edition of the Jacksonville Daily News has an editorial (unfortunately one that’s unsigned, so I don’t know to whom to send the “Thank you” note) that details the more 6-year saga of the Onslow County Jail project. Unfortunately, this editorial isn’t available online unless you have a subscription to the online-version of the print-edition.
The editorial refers to current-but-soon-to-be-former Onslow County Commissioner Delma Collins as “lame duck” and I’ve got to say that’s probably the best thing I’ve ever read in the paper.
The thrill line:
Although lame-duck Commissioner Delma Collins indicated that there were no allegations of impropriety in connection with the jail project, he also declined to answer a relevant question posed to him by The Daily News: Whether he would do anything differently. Collins said it would be “unethical” for him to say.
The emphasis, it’s mine.
I’m not quite sure I understand Mr. Collins’ answer to the question by the Jacksonville Daily News, though. How can it be “unethical” for Mr. Collins to be open about his opinions and his activities as Commissioner? It seems to me that his can be one of two potential answers:
- I’m quite happy with the project and wouldn’t do anything differently
- We (the Onslow County Board of Commissioners) screwed the pooch on this and I’d do A, B, C, X, Y and Z differently.
Am I missing something here?

I think we’re all missing something, Thomas, and that’s not an accident.

You’re probably right, Lou. It’s a good thing that Collins will be out of the Onslow County political arena sooner rather than later.
