While the City of Jacksonville has a ginormous budget (and the debt to go with it), the Onslow County Board of Commissioners chose to cut back and pull funds from the reserve account.

The Jacksonville Daily News reports.

The commissioners were presented a budget plan that called for increasing the tax rate from 50.3 cents per $100 of valuation to 54 cents. But in unanimously adopting the budget Wednesday night, they elected to avoid a tax hike by taking about $4 million from the reserve fund.

Several departments didn’t get the funding requested this year, notably the Department of Social Services, the Fire Department and the Emergency Management Services. The County seems to have made the tough choices to save the taxpayer.

Let’s hope that it’s a tough choice that doesn’t cause more damage to the community than can be afforded…
