Open Letter to the Jacksonville Daily News: Shame on You for Shoddy Coverage of Soup in a Bowl

Dear Jacksonville Daily News,

Shame on you for only sending a photographer to the Jacksonville-Onslow Council for the Arts‘ Soup in a Bowl event yesterday. And an even bigger shame on you for having a photograph and a slightly over-run sentence for your coverage in today’s newspaper.

With a staff of over 30 professional journalists, I would’ve expected more from you. But, of course, you never fail to disappoint me, Jacksonville Daily News. Shoddy reporting, poor grammar, and no proof-reading is but a summary of your shortcomings. Now, I must add a lack of interest in local events to that list.

It’s no wonder that the citizens of Jacksonville and Onslow County are mostly unaware of the vast majority of events held in the area. Your inability to provide coverage is clearly the cause.

Shame on you, Jacksonville Daily News.

Your embarrassed reader,

Thomas

  1. It’s a shame that on the rare occasion that I find out about an event through the Daily News, it is almost invariably after the fact, with little information about the event, and if I want to actually know something more, I have to look it up elsewhere.

I rarely bother to do more than look at the front page and read Timmi Toler’s column (which I actually do at her blog). I do both online because there’s no way I’d pay for what the Daily News is providing.

Oh, and I confess I do occasionally read the Letters to the Editor, mostly for the humor value. …or if I need an excuse to bang my head on my desk.

  2. To clarify, the first paragraph is the cause and the second the effect, not vice-versa.

  3. Lou,

    Thanks for commenting.

The Jacksonville Daily News have a really bad habit of not reporting on important local events. Instead, they sell too many of their inches for AP stories that have little or no local importance.

I also wouldn’t pay for the paper, but luckily I have a co-worker that subscribes. It’s interesting the life views one has when The Jacksonville Daily News is their primary news source…Interesting, and quite sad.

  4. [...] Since it didn’t take the first time… [...]
