Dear Jacksonville Police Department: Tell Your Officers to Obey the Traffic Laws they Enforce
by Thomas Brock - February 18th, 2008.Filed under: Jacksonville City Police Department, Jacksonville, NC, Onslow County, NC, Open Letters.
I was looking out the window today and noticed a uniformed Jacksonville Police Officer on an official Jacksonville Police Department bicycle. This, in and of itself, is unremarkable. What was remarkable though, was that I watched this bicycling officer breeze right through the exact intersection as Jacksonville City Police Cruiser # 355.
The NC Department of Transportation’s bicycling laws page specifically says that cyclists are required to “obey all traffic signs and signals.” This includes stop signs at intersections.
So, please, Jacksonville City Police Chief Michael G. Yaniero, get your officers some training about traffic laws. They need it in a bad kinda way.

Well, at least I can say one thing for the City of Erie Police Department - they are no hypocrites. They themselves don’t obey traffic laws…but they don’t normally enforce them, either.

JPD is pretty fervent on enforcement…Sometimes.
You can never find them near Lejeune Blvd and Camp Lejeune’s main gate during morning or evening rush hours. The result is (usually Marines and usually young) drivers speeding down a we-all-know-this-lane-ends course and pulling in front of a line of 50 cars that’ve been moving at dead-horse speed because of the (usually Marines and usually young) drivers speeding down a we-all-know-this-lane-ends course and pulling in front of a line of 50 cars.
See a pattern? My guess is that the City loses at least $50,000 of potential revenue a year from the lack of enforcement at this particular spot.
