Onslow County Commissioner Delma Collins Breaks Promise to Teachers

When Commissioner Collins ran for Onslow County Clerk of Superior Court in 2006 he promised the teachers in a county-wide letter that he would end his political career if he lost the election.
Said Commissioner Collins in the letter:
“I have promised my family that I will leave the political arena if I am unsuccessful in [...]

A Review: Jacksonville’s Jailhouse Bar-B-Q

Friday night I had dinner at the Jailhouse Bar-B-Q restaurant in Jacksonville. The Jailhouse is named such because it’s home is the former Onslow County Jail. The restaurant still has that feeling of imprisonment, but not nearly the negative connotation…More like a prisoner in a barbeque’ed paradise!
I had the ribs and BBQ dinner with [...]

Jacksonville Daily News Admits Fault for Exposing their Bias

Yesterday, I wrote about the Jacksonville Daily News allowing their conservative (read as Republican) bias to show.
In today’s print edition, the editorial staff printed an explanation and accepted responsibility for the error and republished the corrected letter.
Editor’s note: Due to an editing error, Barack Obama’s name was misspelled in a letter to the editor [...]

Dear Jacksonville Daily News: Your Bias is Showing

An interesting error appeared in today’s print edition of the Jacksonville Daily News.
This letter appeared in the paper.

See anything interesting there? Maybe the three references to Senator Barack Obama as “Osama”? I’m not certain whether it’s a Daily News mistake (and we all know they’re prone to problems over there) or if it [...]

Jacksonville’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Workshop: A recapitulation

The time I spent at the Jacksonville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s workshop earlier today was definitely worth the time.
There were a few citizens there the same time I was and we all mostly agreed on the bicycling and pedestrian needs of Jacksonville. The biggest need is a unified system of bicycling/pedestrian trails. The [...]

Help Formulate Jacksonville’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

Today (I know it’s short notice, I just found out) from 4pm to 7pm the City of Jacksonville will be hosting workshops to allow public comment and input on the City’s plans. There will be representation from the Jacksonville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Greenways Incorporated (consultants) present to answer question and discuss ideas.
If [...]

Today’s Headline of the Day: "Sex with dead model ‘was wrong’"

Ya don’t say.
BBC News.
Mark Dixie claimed he did not realise she was dead until after he had sex with her body, the Old Bailey heard.

Heaven’s-to-Betsy. You’d think the lack of screaming and struggling while being sexually assaulted would be a clue.

Dear Jacksonville Police Department: Tell Your Officers to Obey the Traffic Laws they Enforce

I was looking out the window today and noticed a uniformed Jacksonville Police Officer on an official Jacksonville Police Department bicycle. This, in and of itself, is unremarkable. What was remarkable though, was that I watched this bicycling officer breeze right through the exact intersection as Jacksonville City Police Cruiser # 355.
The NC Department [...]

The Jacksonville Daily News: Your Source for Painfully Obvious Stuff

Dear Jacksonville Daily News: We know traffic is heavy near base. A more interesting article would detail when traffic isn’t.
Just sayin’.
Your faithful (if fatigued) reader,
Thomas.
P.S.:
If you’re going to change the title of your article so that you look less ridiculous (look at them reader comments!), remember to change the page title.  Otherwise, you’ll look…You [...]
