The Jacksonville Daily News‘ recent report on a protest by the Westboro Baptist Church folk planned for this Saturday has brought out Onslow County’s ignorant and intolerant.

Some of the comments are just plain silly and unAmerican.

Mary says:

This is one time I do not agree with freedom of speech.

Really? I didn’t realize that the Constitution of the United States gave options. Speech is free, or it isn’t. There’s no middle ground.

Larry says:

This is what the City of Jacksonville thinks about the military. They should have denied it.

The City of Jacksonville would’ve been open to a bevy of lawsuits had they denied the Church’s request to assemble and protest, Larry. Do you really want your hard-earned tax-dollars paying for a lawsuit? Or worse, do you want your tax-dollars paying the Church because they’re freedoms of assembly and speech were denied?

I certainly don’t agree with this group of people. Lance Corporal Lauterbach’s death isn’t the “wrath of god” upon the Marine Corps. It’s the act of one (or two?) psychopath(s). That’s all.

The way to make a stand against this church is to ignore them. Go about your day, avoid visiting the protest or, worse, protesting the protest. Giving them the attention they’re asking for will only feed their frenzy and cause something bad to happen.

But, back to the commenters…

Stop being idiots. These folks have the same Constitutional rights as you. The ideas you’re suggesting (editing free speech, only allowing those who agree with you to speak) pave the road to tyranny. And, really, isn’t that road getting enough pavement these days?
